364 Greatest Haitians
That Ever Lived. . .
Haitian Organization for Liberty, Equality and Fraternity (H.O.L.E.F.)
Dear brothers and sisters, fellow Haitians,
thank you for taking the time to read this.
It is a pleasure to introduce to you HOLEF.
The organization started as a " Tet Ensam" group in 1985 by a couple of sixteen
year old teenagers in love with their homeland, our beloved Haiti, but already fearful of
its future. Needless to say, the group has been dormant for the past twenty years, enough
time for every one to go learn a profession and become productive. We are still very much
in love with our homeland and are determined more than ever to do the things we talked
about twenty years ago. Briefly, our primary goal is to constantly encourage dialogue
between fellow Haitians and our secondary goal is to undertake projects that unite us and
remind us of our common heritage as a people. You probably have similar goals too. Then we
can talk.
In that regard, we want to say that despite
what our beloved Haiti has become today, a great many Haitians, over the past 200+ years,
gave their time, engaged their courage, contributed their knowledge, committed their
hearts and their lives so that Haiti could have been a better country today for you and I.
Unfortunately, the evidence seems to indicate that they did not succeed. HOLEF feel that
we should not forget them and we should honor them in a grandiose manner. And that is why
the organization is launching a campaign to say Thank you to all of those
Haitians who helped Haiti one way or another, especially those who have always put the
welfare and the general interests of Haiti ahead of their own.
Our objective is to find the 364 greatest
Haitians that ever lived.
In order to achieve this goal, we need your
input and your help. We beg you to participate in this campaign by casting one vote for
every Haitian, past or present that you think should be in the list of the 364 Greatest
Haitians that ever lived. It is a very simple process to participate in: just grab a sheet
of paper, write or type down all the names for which you want to cast a vote for and mail
it to us at the address below. You can also opt to include short essays that support your
votes. Make the essays anonymous if you wish to.
Dear fellow Haitian compatriots, we have no
affiliations. And we do not intend to have any that would compromise our patriotism. So we
kindly ask for a donation of $3 or more to help us carry out this project; there is no
limit on the number names you can vote for but always one name once equals one vote.
The money collected will be used for the
following purposes in the order indicated
- Produce and freely distribute an almanac on
which one of each day of the year will be dedicated to honor and remember each one of the
364 greatests.
- Lay a basket of flowers on their final
resting place or present them with a thank-you plaque.
- If enough money is raised, create some
temporary jobs in Haiti and attempt to open up a badly needed public research library in
Haiti.
Lets fight the demon of individualism
that always keeps us divided. Lets support one another. Lets learn to trust
each other. Lets remind ourselves that we are a nation, one family and if we stick
together we can get by anything, anything at all. We are counting very much on
participation and your patriotism. Results will be posted on this website. Thank you in
advance and accept our patriotic salutations.
